Selected Photographs

Series 1: General File, c.1910-c.1978

This series is comprised of an unusually rich collection of images covering a period from c.1910 until c.1978. This period represents the life of the Annville Institute until the closing of Annville High School. There are 997 copy prints chosen from the total of 3085 photographs. The original images consist of mounted prints, seven large photo albums and loose prints. The excellent condition of the original photos yielded very good copies.

The subject matter included in this series depicts mission life and work, campus life, student labor, and theater. In addition there is good coverage of the local landscape, campus grounds and buildings, architecture and transportation. The researcher will find a wide variety of candid photos that provide a unique view of the local inhabitants, students and staff at work and play.

Series 2: History of Annville High School, c.1920-c.1940

This series of 48 copy prints was chosen from 169 original photographs. All of the originals were contained in a single album presented to Annville High School as a gift of the 1938 graduating class. The album’s original content spanned a period from c.1920 until c.1940. However, the school continued to add photographs so that the final content of the album covered briefly the entire history of Annville High School.

The subject matter is widely varied and includes many older class photos, faculty groups, student plays, sports teams and views of the original campus buildings and grounds. The later photos consist primarily of class trips to Washington, D.C., class groups, students at work, faculty and campus views. The originals are of consistently good quality and provide the researcher a brief overview of the Annville High School.

Series 3: D.C. Nehorir Photographs, c.1930s

This series was taken entirely from one album labeled “D.C. Nehorir.” A total of 25 images were selected from the 104 original mounted prints. The period represented spans primarily the 1930s. The subject matter includes student activities, sports, labor, crafts, portraits, campus views and the local landscape. Quality of the originals is generally good.

Series 4: Lisa Overturff Photographs, c.1970-1979

This series of 15 loose prints was selected from 99 original images taken by Lisa Overturff, a graduate of the Annville High School. The period spanned ranges from c.1970 through 1979. Subject matter includes views of students, staff, graduation, landscapes, architecture, and the school basketball team in action. Quality of the original prints is generally good.

Series 5: Alma Hacker Photographs, c.1920-c.1970

Alma Hacker, served as a staff member at the Annville Institute until her retirement. This series of 38 images was selected from 90 loose photographs she had either taken or collected during her tenure at the school. The period covered ranges from c.1920 until c.1970 and the subject matter varies widely.

Included are several action shots of the school basketball team taken around 1950 (Mrs. Hacker’s Husband coached the team for several years). Also included are portraits of students and staff, group portraits, landscapes, views of campus buildings and grounds, and local architecture. At the time of their selection, the condition of the originals was generally good.

Series 6: John E. and Mary Moore Photographs, c.1920-c.1940

Taken from a collection of 53 loose prints identified as “John E. and Mary Moore Photographs”, 33 images have been included in this series. This series provides an interesting and insightful look at the Annville Institute during the twenty years covered by the photos.

Subject matter for this group includes several excellent views of the campus, landscapes and buildings. Also included are views of students in class, at work, and formal group portraits along with photographs of staff members, athletic teams, and transportation by horse drawn wagon. The quality of the original images at the time of their selection was considered very good.
