Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of recordings documenting the event "Blacks in Appalachia - From Invisibility to Importance: A Symposium, Seminar, and Celebration" held at Berea College, May 19-20, 1989. The event marked the establishment of the Goode Professorship of Black and Appalachian Studies at Berea College.

This professorship was made possible by a gift to Berea College by Roland and Dorothy Goode, Berea College alumnae. The Goode Professor for 1989 was William H. Turner. Berea College faculty making presentations at the event, in addition to Turner, were Andrew Baskin, Jackie Burnside, Loyal Jones, and Richard Sears. Other speakers at the event included John Fleming, Jane Sapp, James B. Bussell, and Eula Mae Hammonds.
