Materials in this series consist of personal/family, presidential/ administrative, and business correspondence. This series is not in alphabetical order. Correspondents may have contents in more than one folder.

Personal/family correspondence spans the period from Hutchins student years (1890s) through his career as a pastor, professor, and college president, and continue through the mid-1950s and consists of family correspondence to and from Robert G. and Harriet J. Hutchins, his parents; his wife, Anna M. Hutchins; sons Robert Maynard and Francis S. Hutchins; and various others. Additional correspondence provides documentation of the network of Hutchins' friends and professional associates. Correspondents include: Seth Low Pierrepont, William H. Danforth, Walter McDougall, Pauline Jeffery, and Hilda Watson.

Presidential/administrative correspondence includes letters from Berea trustees, donors, college faculty and staff, and others. The correspondence reflects Hutchins' administration of the college and work following retirement from the college. Box 47, Folder 4 is Restricted.

Business correspondence (dating predominantly from 1919-1952) relates principally to Hutchins' private affairs; however, a small portion touches on college administration.

Hutchins retains copyright on the personal/family and business correspondence in this series; single photo­copies may be made for the private use of researchers. Presidential/administrative correspondence is unrestricted except for a single file containing confidential per­sonnel-related matters.
