Religious Songs
Scope and Contents
This series contains Combs’ collection of religious songs—most serious, but some comic—which do not have names associated with them. The songs were labeled “white” or “negro” and identified by state. Many of the songs are from Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Tennessee, as well as Kentucky, and may have been acquired after Combs left Kentucky and, as a Methodist minister traveled around the southern states. The songs are untitled and are thus listed by first line (they are not in alphabetical order)
