Ballard was born in Berea to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ballard, who were both slaves.  For many years, Miss Ballard worked for Professor and Mrs. LeVant Dodge, President and Mrs. Goodell Frost, and President and Mrs. William Hutchins before operating a beauty parlor on Short Street.  Melissa Ballard was one of Berea's most beloved citizens and passed away at the age of 84 on April 25, 1949.

Materials include: correspondence, clippings, photographs, obitituary, and Peck notes.
