Scope and Contents

Led by the instructor Dr Jackie Burnside, the L[and]A 200A: Discoveries – All Work has Dignity class visited the Special Collections and Archives to be introduced and mentored in the analysis of primary and secondary source material.

Part of their assignment was to create a single “zine” page which ultimately was revised into a “Zine Scrapbook”. The Mountain Day volume was constructed in class as a pilot exercise, aiming to showcase how visual images could be created to interpret research findings. Using duplicated administrative records concerning the organisation, activities, pertaining to the annual College holiday, archivist Morphew curated the pages into this scrapbook.

The course asked students to locate, access archival records and research subjects pertaining to the 1904 Day Law, its implementation, long-term impacts upon the College and wider community. “The Idea of Berea” assignment was inspired by George Washington Cable's address to Berea College 1911, in which he lectured about the importance of preserving the institutional philosophy and its founding principals post Day Law. The zine scrapbook features the duplicated copies of the students visual final assignment. Cultivating into collective a visual exploration of Berea College’s archival holdings.
