Barbara Angle was a writer, laborer, and activist born and raised in the coal-mining region of western Maryland and is the granddaughter of a miner; she earned a degree in history and journalism from the University of Maryland, worked as an editor in Washington, D.C., returned home in the early 1970s and went to work in West Virginia mines (serving as a general laborer, longwall chocksetter, and shuttle-car operator), wrote about women miners and workplace sexual harassment, and published fiction and nonfiction including the novel Those That Mattered and other pieces for outlets such as Southern Exposure.
