Southern Maryland Folklife Project Audio Recordings
Scope and Contents
This series consists of original minidisc, DAT, and cassette recordings of interviews and musical performances resulting from the Klines' work conducting the Southern Maryland Folklife Project (SMFP) mainly during 2002 and 2003. The project was initiated by a collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts Folk Arts Division, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Maryland Historical Trust, Historic St. Mary's City, and St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Particularly notable is the documentation of African American church singing and preaching styles in St. Mary's, Charles and Calvert counties where African-American communities date to the 1600s. Church congregations mainily focused on were those of the Shiloh Community and Mt. Calvary United Methodist Churches.
