Peace Corp Volunteer Training Project-Senegal

Abstract

In contract with the U.S. Peace Corps, in June and August of 1963, Berea College provided training for forty Peace Corp Volunteers to serve in Senegal while undertaking projects in rural community development, English education, and physical Education. Associate Dean Kenneth H. Thompson served as Berea's Peace Corp Project Director and Dr. James R. Bobbitt served as the Program Studies Coordinator and Assistant Project Director.

Pine Mountain (Kentucky) Community Study Records

Abstract The study was proposed in 1949 by Berea College president, Francis S. Hutchins, then a trustee of Pine Mountain Settlement School. The school's boarding high school had closed that year and elementary programs merged with the Harlan County school system. Abstract Pine Mountain Settlement School was founded in 1913, by Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long. The two women received ninety-five acres of land from William Creech for the purpose of providing educational opportunities for the people of the Pine Mountain area of Harlan County, Kentucky.
