Perley F. Ayer Papers

Pine Mountain (Kentucky) Community Study Records

Abstract The study was proposed in 1949 by Berea College president, Francis S. Hutchins, then a trustee of Pine Mountain Settlement School. The school's boarding high school had closed that year and elementary programs merged with the Harlan County school system. Abstract Pine Mountain Settlement School was founded in 1913, by Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long. The two women received ninety-five acres of land from William Creech for the purpose of providing educational opportunities for the people of the Pine Mountain area of Harlan County, Kentucky. Scenario Planning Taskforce: Academic Restructuring

The Scenario Planning Taskforce (SPT) was created in response to the 2008 market performance that significantly impacted Berea College's endowment. The taskforce was charged with developing two to four scenarios of academic restructuring that would honor Berea's core mission including no undergraduate tution while fitting within a reduced budget for the 2011-2012 academic year.
