Abstract
Berea College's Extension Services provided short-term, informal educational programming and services, primarily in adult education, both on and off campus, to persons living in communities around Berea (including the mountain regions as far away as West Virginia). Programming included Opportunity Schools (held both on campus and in other communities), lectures, and the publication of pamphlets, bulletins and leaflets on a variety of topics.

Abstract
Joseph O. Van Hook was raised in Pulaski County, Kentucky and began teaching in a one-room school house in 1909. He came to Berea in 1910 and earned two diplomas from the Normal School. He served as an Army corporal during World War I and spent four years following the war teaching in China at the Shanghai American School (1921-1925). The study was proposed in 1949 by Berea College president, Francis S. Hutchins, then a trustee of Pine Mountain Settlement School. The school's boarding high school had closed that year and elementary programs merged with the Harlan County school system. It was concluded that a socio-economic study of the area would be useful in identifying possible new areas of service for the school to pursue. Pine Mountain Settlement School was founded in 1913, by Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long. The two women received ninety-five acres of land from William Creech for the purpose of providing educational opportunities for the people of the Pine Mountain area of Harlan County, Kentucky.

William E. Barton attended Berea College from 1880 to 1885 (B.S.) and married Esther Treat Bushnell—a Berea elementary teacher—upon graduation from college. Barton was a circuit pastor in Robbins, Tennessee, until 1887. From 1887 through 1890 Barton was a pastor in Litchfield, Ohio, while taking courses at Oberlin Theological School.
