Pine Mountain (Kentucky) Community Study Records

Abstract The study was proposed in 1949 by Berea College president, Francis S. Hutchins, then a trustee of Pine Mountain Settlement School. The school's boarding high school had closed that year and elementary programs merged with the Harlan County school system. The two women received ninety-five acres of land from William Creech for the purpose of providing educational opportunities for the people of the Pine Mountain area of Harlan County, Kentucky. Abstract Kentuckian Katherine Pettit and Smith College Graduate Ethel DeLong finalized the incorporation of Pine Mountain Settlement School (Harland County, Kentucky) in 1913.
