This collection contains lists of Bereans who served during WWI and WWII including information on rank, place of service, branch, assignments, and other service information.  The collection also contains a number of letters written by Bereans during WWII and a limited number of photographs of those who served.

Abstract The album is, unfortunately, unidentified at present.  Although most photographs are “labeled” with personal notes, some with names, there is no indication of the name of the owner, specific dates, or full names of most people pictured.  However, photographs clearly show a female student who attended both the Berea Academy and the Teacher’s College in Richmond, spent time serving in Europe during WWI, followed by what can be assumed as time teaching in Pennsylvania.  The clothing and other...

Abstract During the advent of World War II, the U.S. Navy turned to liberal arts colleges to provide a basic education for their recruits.  Between July 1, 1943, and June 30, 1946, more than 125,000 individuals were enrolled in the V-12 Navy College Training Program which was offered in 131 colleges and universities throughout the United States. William J. Hutchins Papers

Abstract Hutchins, born in 1850 and native of Brooklyn, New York, attended Oberlin College, Yale University, and Oberlin Theological Seminary. In 1896 he graduated from Union Theological Seminary and was ordained a Presbyterian minister, receiving his first pastorate at Bedford Church in Brooklyn.  Later that same year,Hutchins married Anna Laura Murch of Cleveland (whom he had met at Oberlin).
