Academy School

Abstract

Created as an affiliated school of Berea College, the Academy served as a Senior High School. In 1938, reorganization abolishes the Academy by adding the ninth and tenth grades to the Foundation School, thus creating the Lower Division (Grades 11-12, College Freshman and Sophomore years) and Upper Division (College Junior and Senior years) to the College.

Alpha Zeta Literary Society Records

Abstract For twenty-five years, Phi Delta Literary Society maintained an elite reputation as Berea College’s only literary society. However, when in the fall of 1894 “the society became unwieldy and torn by internal dissension,” twenty young men held separate meetings to form a new society. Abstract When created, the Cabinet (or Schedule Committee) consisted of the College President, Dean of Women, Registrar, and Dean (or Assigning Officer) of each of the College’s five departments. The Cabinet acted for the General Faculty in granting permissions affecting more than one department, in assigning class-rooms and hours, and appointing duties to workers that did not fall within the department to which they belonged. Berea College Fire Department

Abstract

Starting in 1899, a fire brigade made up of students and known as the "Bucket Brigade," was established on campus and responded to calls both on and off campus. Formally established in 1905 by the College, the Fire Department served the campus and the city and was staffed by students. In 1966, the City of Berea took over responsibilities for operating the fire department ending what many affectionally referred to as the "College Fire Department."
