Abstract
For nearly 100 years, Berea College Convocations has made lectures, concerts and the performing arts available to the students and the general public. A significant part of students' educational experience at the College is offered through the Convocation series which, in addition to enlivening the intellectual, aesthetic and religious lives of students, provides common experiences for students, faculty, and staff.

Joseph Ray, Jr. was born in Berea and was a 1952 graduate of the Foundation School of Berea College. After attending Berea for a short period, Ray studied at the University of Kentucky where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History in 1956. Ray would then go on to earn his M.A. at Emory University before embarking on a long and distinguished career as a teacher, historian, actor, and director.
